This project will install a borehole providing reliable safe water for approximately 1,500 people living in the rural community of Kikooba, Kiboga district, Uganda. They will benefit from reduced water-related disease and reduced time and drudgery from collecting water from distant sources - especially women and children.
Currently local people have no adequate water nearby and have to walk long distances to surface water sources (streams and ponds) as shown on the left. The water is not fit for consumption and severely compromises health, especially of children. It also consumes the time and energy of the (mostly) women and girls who do the arduous work of collection, sometimes at risk to their own safety, that could be better used for other, more productive, purposes.
The project will begin with training for the water committee and community meetings to emphasise the need for co-operation and good hygiene to ensure the health benefits are realised and sustainability achieved. Households will contribute a small monthly fee to enable them to use the water and the funds collected will be put towards repairs and maintenance.
We're most grateful to Wilmslow Wells for Africa for providing a grant of £4,282 to enable the drilling to begin. If you'd like to contribute towards our shortfall of £590 please donate below. Thanks so much!
